Portsmouth market commentary
What the latest official data may mean for buyers, renters and investors.
Portsmouth’s average house price stood at £250,377 in April 2026, according to the latest UK House Price Index. That is up 1.1% on March, when the average was £247,622.
It leaves the city just below the £251,000 mark, and it points to a firmer month after a quieter start to the year.
Portsmouth’s private rental market continued to edge higher in May 2026, according to the ONS Price Index of Private Rents. The average monthly rent reached £1,366.
That was up from £1,362 in April, so rents rose by £4 over the month. The month-on-month increase was 0.3%, which shows growth remained steady rather than sharp.
Portsmouth’s labour-market picture is fairly steady, with a resident population of 214,321 in 2024. That gives useful context for the city’s local housing demand and affordability backdrop, but it does not by itself explain property values or rents.
