Oxford market commentary
What the latest official data may mean for buyers, renters and investors.
Oxford’s average house price stood at £466,815 in June 2026, according to the UK House Price Index. That is down 1.2% on the month and 0.9% lower than a year earlier.
Prices remain high in absolute terms, but the latest reading points to a softer market than earlier in the year.
Oxford’s average private rent stood at £1,966 in July 2026, according to the ONS Price Index of Private Rents. That was up £5 from June’s £1,961.
Month on month, rents rose by 0.2%, showing a small but steady increase rather than a sharp move. The annual picture is still stronger.
Oxford’s labour market profile shows a city with a relatively strong earnings and employment base. According to ONS/Nomis, the resident population was 165,940 in 2025.
That scale matters because it points to a large local workforce and a broad household base, rather than a small commuter settlement.
